Paul O’Rourke: A Walk of Hopelessness and Happiness
My walk is based on my own personal experience of staying in a homeless shelter after release from prison. My walk deals with my own struggles on living in homeless shelters and trying to start a new life after my release. After having successfully overcome addiction in my recent past, I thought it was particularly ironic that I had to spend time in homeless shelters again where it was very difficult to avoid people using drugs.
I designed my walk with the hope to open people’s minds and make people more aware of the challenges that people face when released from prison and no place to go to except homelessness or homeless shelters.
I also used my walk to let the reader see through my eyes, the many different experiences of homelessness in Cork City. I chose stops along the route that I would often walk when taking time out from the homeless shelter where I was staying after prison. In doing so, I also makes observations of how I experienced particular places, spaces and even city furniture in the inner city of Cork City, as well as other homeless persons, both including hopeless as well as happy observations and encounters.
